Noun (n.)
A noun is a word that names a person, animal, place, concept, or object. Basically, anything that names a “thing” is a noun. This includes a cat, dog, car, basketball, San Francisco, Cleopatra, or self-preservation.
Ex: A cat is in my room. (cat and room are nouns.)
Verb (v.)
A verbs is a word that shows an action, occurrence, or state of being. It allows us to express what subjects do or what happens to them. To do, to work, to play, to know and to dance etc. are considered as verbs.
Ex: I play video games. (play is a verb.)
Adjective (adj.)
An adjective is a word that modifies a noun. It adds meaning or a detail to describe an object or thing. By using adjectives, we can create vivid imagery and convey emotions more effectively in our communication.
Ex: A big orange cat is in front of my door. (big and orange are adjectives.)
Adverb (adv.)
An adverb is a word that describes an adjective, a verb, or another adverb.
It provides more information about how an action is performed or the degree of a quality.
Ex: Mike carefully drives his bike. (carefully is an adverb.)
Pronoun (pro.n)
A pronoun a word that you substitute for another specific noun.
The reader or listener know which specific noun
you’re referring to.
Ex: There is a dog in my house. It has white fur. (it is a pronoun.)
Preposition (prep.)
A preposition indicates the relationship between words in a sentence.
It usually shares a relationship of time, place, and direction. Common prepositions include “in,” “on,” “at,” and “between.”
Ex: I live in Los Angeles. (in is a preposition.)
Conjunction (conj.)
A conjunction is a word that links different parts of a sentence.
It is used to connect words, phrases, or clauses to enhance clarity.
Common examples include “and,” “but,” and “or.”
Ex: I like studying English and my friend likes studying history. (and is a conjunction.)
Articles (a, an ,the)
Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. The article “a” is used before consonant sounds. “An” is used before vowel sounds to show any one of a kind. “The” is a definite article used to refer to a specific noun that is already known to the reader.
Ex: A teacher wears a black suit. (A is an article.)
